Being Different

Being different is always a challenge. If you are the type of person that doesn’t follow the status quo (normal conditions) then you will be considered different and an unusual species. Different is good. Being different gives you identity. Your own specific identity. You will get opposition from the people that surround you but that’s the challenge of being different.

People speak about being different as if it was a bad thing. Society makes stereotypes on groups of people. The fat group, the nerds, the gothic group, the Jesus freaks, the computer geeks, the party goers, the list can go on and on.

These groups can be recognized by their different characteristics. They have one thing in common, they are different!

Society and culture says that being different is bad thing. It says that if you are different then you are weird. It says that if you are different from your spouse, it’s ok to divorce. They call it “irreconcilable differences.” When the word tells us that God made us different and our differences should unite us, not separate us.
In Romans 12:2 says, “Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what He wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.”

We as children of God need to be different. We can’t go with the flow. We can’t just fit in where people want to put us. The waves of life will make you choose between one thing and another. But YOU need to be different. Don’t say yes to everything. Don’t agree to everything. Stand your ground. Speak out. You are different.
See, we fix our eyes on God. That alone makes us different. We are not looking at the celebrities, or athletes, nor are we focusing on the next top model. We focus our eyes on God.
When we do that, there are a few things He does for us. Let’s look at this: First, He changes you from the inside out! That’s why you don’t fit in. While maybe you look like other people on the outside but inside, you are different. You don’t think like them, you don’t feel like them, nothing inside is the same. Second, He brings the best out of you. No one brings the best out of you like God can. He sees the best of you even when you are being your worst. He makes you shine. He makes your face light up. He makes you smile. He brings out the best!! Third, He develops maturity in you. He makes you understand that it is okay to be different. Actually, He tells us to be different. He wants you to be different. Different is good. He made you different.

Don’t be pressured to be like someone else. Don’t permit influences in your life that tells us that you have to be just like them. Learn to focus on God and let Him develop in you maturity. Let Him bring the best out of you. He always knows best. The difference is that you are a child of God and that alone makes the difference!!
